The two year old Google Nexus One isn’t due an official Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update, but that hasn’t stopped the enterprising team at CyanogenMod from porting it the the veteran HTC device anyway. Read on for the video!
CyanogenMod is one of the most popular unofficial Android ROMs which power users can install, and the latest version, CyanogenMod 9, is based on the code for Ice Cream Sandwich. It’s yet to be publicly released, but a video has already surfaced showing this flavour of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich running on the Google Nexus One.
As you can see, it runs surprisingly smoothly for a phone that Google doesn’t want to roll out the update for, though as ever with these early builds, there are a few caveats.
The Google Nexus One’s trackball is rendered useless, you can’t take screenshots as you can normally with Ice Cream Sandwich, and there’s no hardware acceleration, so transitions are a bit sticky.
But it’s a promising start, and if you’re itching for a taste of Ice Cream Sandwich, you may not have to wait until your manufacturer and your network deign to roll out an update sometime next year – so long as you’re prepared to go off piste.
