The iPhone 5 has already been found buried in new iOS 5.1 code. But the back end of Apple’s mobile operating system is also hiding another secret: the new Apple TV. Given the code name J33, it’s not yet known whether this is simply a replacement set top box, or a proper flatscreen TV with Siri smarts.
The new Apple TV was sniffed out by the guys at 9to5mac. They reckon this new piece of kit is edging very close to release, thanks to being given a proper codename, something which Apple only does in the weeks ahead of a device’s launch.
What this new Apple TV will come loaded with is unclear. Rumours have been flying about it including 1080p playback and the same A5 chipset as the iPad 2 and iPhone 4S. It’s certainly due an upgrade, with the current model revealed way back in September 2010.
A flatscreen Apple TV is still in the offing. But with sources suggesting it won’t be out until late 2012 at the earliest, surely this J33 effort is a set top box rather than a full-on HD boobtube.
