The BlackBerry PlayBook tablet’s not had the best time of things, with poor critical reception, vital missing services and Adobe giving up on one of its biggest selling points. Now, it’s being touted by RIM as a freebie to lure people into upgrading their BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES).
BlackBerry Enterprise Server is the stuff that makes your company BlackBerry work, and let the IT boffs do their thing from afar whenever it goes wrong, and to entice people to upgrade to the latest version, BES 5, before the end of the year, it’s chucking in a free BlackBerry PlayBook tablet.
It’s more than a little unusual for something that’s supposed to be a premium, flagship product: the price of the 16GB model has already fallen £80 since launch, and it can now be had on its own for under £220.
One wonders if a firesale akin to the £99 HP TouchPad is around the corner. Of course, it’s not the only tablet going for cheap today, mind. It’s Black Friday in the US, and Apple has slashed the prices of its products around the world: a brand new iPad 2 has never been cheaper.
