It’s been a while, but it seems webOS is finally at death’s door. During an earnings call to investors last night, HP openly discussed the, “… wind down of [its] webOS device business,” finally suggesting that the end is night for the OS which cost them $1.2 billion.
While the official sale or killing off of the operating system has still not been officially confirmed, HP is now closer than ever to ending what will always be seen as a billion-dollar folly.
The OS, snapped up from Palm last year, was supposed to give it a foothold in the smartphone and tablet space, but has instead led to one CEO leaving the company, while his replacement battles to save the PC giant from ignominy.
New CEO Meg Whitman has previously intimated that webOS could live in, but the level of uncertainty clearly isn’t helping HP stem its losses and move on. This latest talk of “winding down” at least suggests things are about to come to a head.
