The iPad 3’s Retina Display has been the subject of much rumour mongering in recent weeks. But now some concrete evidence of the slate has been dug up in some iOS 5 code, suggesting Apple is at least looking into the viability of a super hi-res version of its best-selling slate.

Word is that Apple has two iPad 3 models it’s working on, dubbed J1 and J2. The latter is believed to be the Retina Display-packing version, its mention within iOS 5 code pointing towards it already being in testing.

A Retina Display on the iPad 3 would prove costly for Apple, with suppliers already suggesting that pumping out a device with such a high resolution screen would be extremely challenging, not to mention expensive.

Still, this news seems to suggest that Cupertino is at least willing to give it a go. Here’s hoping that this iPad 3 lands, Retina Display in tow.
