There’s no denying that the Samsung Galaxy Nexus’s screen is nothing short of stunning. At 720 x 1280 pixels, it’s beautifully sharp and makes Android Ice Cream Sandwich look even slicker. But if you were planning on snagging one, just beware of dropping it. Because it’s just been confirmed that the phone’s panel isn’t made from Gorilla Glass.

This might not seem like a huge deal at first. But Gorilla Glass, made by Corning, has become a staple of top-end Android phones. Samsung’s Galaxy SII uses it, as do a string of HTC Android handsets.

Corning confirmed the news last night on Twitter, directing disappointed users to Samsung’s door. For its part, Sammy said it was using ‘fortified’ glass on the Galaxy Nexus. However, until we get our hands on the device and give it a going over, it’s unclear how this will stand up to Gorilla Glass’s brilliant reputation for never picking up cracks or scratches.

Does this make the Galaxy Nexus less appealing? Or aren’t you fussed about how the screen can handle wear and tear? Tell us down below in the comments.

Kinda loaded question there, wouldn’t you say? :)

We’ll just have to wait and see how tough the glass is on this phone. There’s no law saying that just because it isn’t ‘Gorilla Glass’ that it’ll suck. It’s only a brand after all.

Gorilla Glass isn’t all that – my Galaxy S2 screen got scratched in my pocket by a packet of chewing gum. Chewing gum. Nothing else is ever in there. Roll on the fortified glass!

I always put a Steinheil screen protector on my devices so no scratches there. I also NEVER drop my phones. I am also reluctant to just let anyone hold my phone and NEVER put my phone in my back pocket. That’s just feminine! Plus my devices have never been iPhones so people don’t care too much for what I am using!

All of my phones have had Gorilla Glass and 50% of the time they end up with scratches. I, for one, couldn’t care less if the Nexus has Gorilla Glass.

Screens on both my old Moto phones are still pristine. My bolt is scratched to shit. This could be deal killer for me. Early adoption is out.

thats cos it uses LOTUS glass developed by corning, which does the same job but is designed for higher resolution screens

Does it? It could do but where is the proof? I hope whatever it uses works as I have mine ordered for the 17/11 :s

The glass could well be Asahi Dragontrail glass, which appears to be an equivalent to Gorilla Glass..Check it out.

As long as the glass is strong and prevents scratches, I’ll be fine, don’t care the brand as long as it is doing it’s job.

not bothered at all, in fact I had bad experience with the so-called gorilla glass. cracked by my 1 year old and scratched by dont know what a day after removing the screen protector. I feel like other people, gg isnt ultimate and rather, just a brand name. I would go far enough to say your title is misleading :)

It’ll handle “wear and tear” pretty well, it’s still special glass, though not the trademarked “gorilla glass”. If you don’t throw your phone around it’ll be fine.

my Galaxy Nexus lasted THREE days before the screen cracked :-(
Didn’t drop it, didn’t do anything rough. hmmmm

Oh no! Do you have any idea what caused it?

Just got mine today, I dropped it 2ft on to tiles and the screen has gone. Not happy at all. My Desire has put up with way more abuse over the past 2 years.

Do not buy this phone.  Had it three days before one small fall cracked the screen. My previous Moto Droid fell a hundred times and nothing ever happened because it was Gorilla.
