When the Apple TV second generation model launched last year, we berated it for a lack of UK services. In particular, BBC iPlayer was a glaring omission, given its appearance on just about every other internet TV, set top box and games console. Now, a year on from launch, it’s finally getting Auntie on-demand – but only if you have an iPad.
An update to the free BBC iPlayer iPad app adds AirPlay video streaming to the service, so you can wirelessly sling EastEnders to an Apple TV.
You’ll need iOS 5 installed on your iPad, but more crucially, you’ll also have needed to pay for an iPad, which makes this quite a pricey work around for the £99 Apple TV. It’s better than nothing we guess, though given the Sony PS3 now streams BBC iPlayer in HD for free, it still leaves Apple’s abilities looking rather feeble.
And before you ask, nope, this doesn’t work with an iPod touch or iPhone running iOS 5: BBC iPlayer is only available as a web app for those devices.
