Sick of your network loading up your phone with apps and content you can’t get rid of? Well, it seems Android Ice Cream Sandwich has the answer. The new version of the Big G’s mobile OS lets you purge your phone of add-ons that come with the handset, but that you don’t want. It seems Google has at last forced networks into realising that tawdry games and naff add-ons are no way to win over potential customers.
It had been feared that killing off apps on Ice Cream Sandwich would only work when trying to get rid of Google-backed native extras that you didn’t like. That would have left networks able to ride roughshod over the feature and load handsets up with unremovable nonsense.
However, a new screen shot, seen here, proves that Google will let you disable anything you don’t like. And disable is the key word. The app will remain on your phone, even if you don’t want it, allowing you to enable it at a later date.
This is huge news for those who want the pleasures of a SIM-free handset, but don’t want to stump up hundreds for a brand new phone. Bloatware is becoming an increasing problem as the world of apps continues to grow ever stronger, so Google wresting back a modicum of control can only be a good thing.
