Want more proof the iPhone 4S isn’t anything like the iPhone 4 on the inside? Take a look at its Bluetooth specs. Apple’s new baby supports Bluetooth 4.0. The ultra-low power wireless system is also found in the latest MacBook Air and Mac Mini, but hints at a whole new range of accessories for the iPhone 4S.

See, Bluetooth 4.0 can pulse once a second, sending updates or receiving data from accessories without so much as tickling the iPhone’s battery life. A single watch battery would keep a Bluetooth 4.0 signal running for years on end. With the power of an iPhone behind it, the impact of wireless data for things like pedometers, proximity sensing or medical accessories is negligible.

With Bluetooth 4.0 on board, the iPhone 4S could easily scream for attention if it were ever separated from your MacBook at high speed, for example, warning that someone’s making off with it while your back is turned, while avoiding false alarms when you casually stroll off to make a cuppa.

Likewise, it could keep record of your movements, syncing with Bluetooth 4.0-enabled trainers which use a single battery for their entire usable life. Imagine knowing how many steps you took in a month, or automatically tallying the number of dance moves clocked up on a night out.

Those with health problems will love it too. Remote sensors could help the iPhone 4S keep track of your pacemaker, blood pressure or pretty much anything else a doctor could find fault with. It’s a brave new wireless world, and seemingly, one Apple’s prepped the iPhone 4S for.
