kindle-1

The new Amazon Kindle eInk digital book reader has just been unveiled in the US. Unlike its Android-powered tablet brother, the Kindle Fire, this smaller monochrome device is coming to the UK, for the absurdly low price of £89. Thing is, lucky Yanks will be playing even less.

We know, we know, £89 is a good deal for an e-Reader that rivals like Sony haven’t even come close to matching. For your money, you get the same 6-inch screen we raved about last year, a 30 percent lighter chassis, Wi-Fi for downloading books and 10 percent faster page turns than the previous iteration.

But the new Amazon Kindle provides all this on the other side of the pond for just $79 (Um, fifty quid). Granted, sales tax is added on top of that, but it varies greatly from state to state and in some isn’t levied at all.

So why the stinging surplus for British eBook fans? Sigh. Regardless, we’ll bring you hands on with the new device just as soon as we can, so stay tuned, and click the image above to see more in the gallery.

No 3G, no audio, and no keyboard or input device other than a virtual keyboard with a direction button to control. As far ad the UK market is concerned it seems to be one step forwards and three steps back for Amazon’s e-readers. It leaves a sour taste in the mouth. Nice going Amazon!

    Sigh, good research there.

The $79 is for the ‘ad supported’ version of the kindle which isn’t available in this country. The price stacks up much closely to the standard version.

I was just going to chime in with the same point.
The reason we don’t have a ~£50 version in the UK is because we don’t have the option to buy the Kindle “with special offers” which is what brings down the US price from $109 to $79.
$109 works out at about £80 – so with the higher VAT that would be about right.

The “with offers” option also knocks $40 of the Kindle Keyboard, and $50 off the Kindle Keyboard 3G – with the ad supported versions being Amazon’s top selling items in the US.
