We’ve been following OnLive ever since it was first revealed some years ago, and now, at long last, it’s “live” in the UK. The subscription service uses server-side computing to power through top notch 3D games and streams them to you via the cloud, meaning you can run powerful PC games on lowly netbooks, and yes, even Macs.
Head on over to OnLive.co.uk and you can sign up for a free trial: after that, the first game will cost you £1, while the PlayBack bundle service will cost you £6.99 per month, giving you access to more than 100 games. We’ve just given it a spin on a Mac, and it honestly couldn’t be simpler, so long as you have a steady broadband connection – by default you get pop up messages telling you to use an Ethernet connection rather than Wi-Fi.
If you’d rather play on your TV than a PC or Mac, you’ll also be able to get the slick mini console and wireless controller at GAME for £69.99 – BT broadband and BT Infinity customers get three months access free.
We wish OnLive well, although what we’re really looking forward to is still to come: that forthcoming Android app (rather than the current boring iPad “Viewer” app which lets you watch but not play), which could theoretically let you play the full version of Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood on your Samsung Galaxy S 2. We cannot wait.
Are you signing up? Let us know how you get on in the comments!
