Oh ho. What’s this? Nikon is teasing a launch of something online over at the dubiously named iamcomings.com, with a countdown ending at 4pm tomorrow UK time. It doesn’t usually resort to this for a fancy new DSLR though – so could this finally be the Nikon mirrorless camera system we’ve heard so much about?

Ever since Panasonic first released the Lumix G1 back in 2008, compact interchangeable lens cameras with no mirrors and large sensors inside have been all the rage. Olympus joined in using the same Micro Four Thirds format, and finding success with its line of PEN cameras, while Sony used a similar concept in its well received NEX series cameras.

It’s not hard to see why they’re so popular – they’re small, but awesomely versatile. But it’s been harder to say why Nikon has waited so long to join the fray. We can only assume it’s been taking its sweet time perfecting it – the rumours that this is the case have been swirling around for years.

There’s no concrete proof that this teaser campaign is for a Nikon mirror less camera system, but for its part, the usually spot on Nikon Rumors is reporting it as fact, and says that it will shoot 1080p HD video, and VGa still images at up to 400fps.

What do you think Nikon is teasing? Would you look twice at it over a new PEN camera? Let’s hear your thoughts in the comments.

It looks to me that from the menu system that they’re targeting non-professionals.
The dials have some new features that make use of the fast processor
but do they really need to be dedicated to the physical button?  The
price point seems pretty high as well.

I like the Nikon build and the design of the lenses looks really nice.  Looks like it has a matte finish to them.

I can see why they produced a camera with the sensor size that it comes
with (so it doesn’t cannibalize DSLR sales).  And from a common consumer
perspective they can see the lenses are smaller than other mirrorless
    systems.

The only real complaint I have is that their pancake 10mm lens is only f/2.8.  Should have been a minimum f/2.0.
