The Sony Tablet S hits shelves today. It’s priced exactly the same as a similarly-specced iPad 2. Our question then, is why bother to choose Android over iPad?

You can grab the Sony Tablet S 16GB from PC World for £399. Currys is selling the 32GB version for £479. Those prices are the same as a 16GB or 32GB iPad 2. Of course, you’ll get Sony’s wedge-shaped design, and some old PlayStation games bundled on the Tablet S, but really, it’s more of the same from yet another manufacturer chasing the iPad’s storming success.

Add into the mix that the Sony Tablet S doesn’t yet come packing 3G, and we’re still shrugging our shoulders. Feel free to put us right in the comments below: Should we care more about the Sony Tablet S?

I’m a huge PlayStation fan and even bigger Android fan, but this is not for me. Yes it’s a good looking device, but it doesn’t bring anything new to the table. I’m bored to death of PS One games that can seemingly run on anything that Sony manufactures. PSP support is pretty cool, but those games were developed with PSP controls in mind. In terms of spec, not that much better than my reasonably priced Iconia a500. I’d hold out for something bigger, like when ICS and next gen processors or something else start hitting tablets before upgrading.

    Really really good looking though!

it doesn’t bother me at all of the 3g thing!!!!!! the question is in general : it something different than the iPad 2 and other tablets?

I don’t get the point of this news.   Sure it’s the same price as the iPad2, but shouldn’t the article be pointing out why its better in so many ways?

Perhaps the braindead writer who only buys Apple products simply doesn’t get the fact that it’s open, you aren’t locked to iTunes, you can put the content that YOU want onto it, not only what apple allows.  That alone is good reason to choose this over iPad2.  But there are plenty of others.   Perhaps you don’t like following the crowd of idiots that just “buy what they know”, perhaps you are interested in this tablets higher res screen, or it’s higher res cameras?  Perhaps you prefer the more intuitive and customizable Honeycomb UI (me, I couldn’t live without widgets).

This “news” is ElectricPic failure of epic proportions.

Sadly, more overpriced toot from Sony.
We’ve had ‘bad luck’ with most of their stuff for years now, and consistently apalling after-sales support. Still keep an eye open in case they return to form. This ain’t it.

This is another nVidia Tegra 2 tablet. Excellent platform!

Me, I’d need a keyboard for the thing to be any use, so we’ve bought a Tosh AC100 smartbook instead.  Same excellent Tegra 2 platform, only we paid £130 for it (new), and bought a spare one too.  Then we upgraded the (fairly creaky as supplied) Android 2 software, bigtime.  Tinkering with other Linux flavours now.  It’s not exactly rocket science, after all.
Sony need to try harder, since the Tosh was released over a year ago now, and is past end-of-life, hence the bargains.  The Tosh will run 10 hours in our hands, and up to 13 with care.  You can drain the battery in 8 hours with videos, radios on, full screen brightness, but that’s not our typical use.  YMMV!
