Earlier this Summer, word did the rounds that Nintendo was revising its 3DS handheld game already, in the wake of lacklustre sales. It sounded silly, but perhaps not as silly as what’s actually happening: behold the bumper case with second analog joystick! Hmm….

Scans of Japanese gaming mag Famitsu have made their way online, revealing the surreal dock, which adds a second, smaller joystick to the Nintendo 3DS, just to the right of the four buttons. Twin thumbsticks are traditionally used to provide movement and viewpoint in action games, and though games will obvious equine extra support, Capcom’s Monster Hunter 3G is reported to work with it.

It’s still not clear what the exact name is, though Japanese gaming blog Andriasang says it will be called the “Expansion Slide”.

Sadly, we’re not convinced that the solution to the Nintendo 3DS misfire is making it bigger. Remember the N64DD? Of course you don’t: it was an enormous extension for the N64 console back in the late 1990s that was never released outside of Japan.

But if there’s one thing we’ve learned, you should never count Nintendo out.
