The Philips Cinema 21:9 series of super widescreen tellies just went downmarket – sort of. While previous models (2D and 3D) have floated around the £4,000 mark, this new gold version slashes the price tag almost in half. So it only costs two grand, then.
We love Philips Cinema 21:9 tellies – Blu-rays without the black bars on the top and bottoms look simply divine on them. But that huge price tag has long been hard to stomach. It’s only a wider screen, why can’t they just make it cheaper?
Well, they have. This new gold edition Philips Cinema 21:9 stretches a huge 50-inches across, packing in a 400Hz panel that can also playback 3D telly using passive display tech (the one with the cheaper glasses, but lower resolution). Wi-Fi is also built in for Philips’ Smart TV internet streaming services, and don’t worry about that gold coating – it’s hardly blingtastic, and could almost be described as silver.
Of course, half of £4,000 is still a huge amount to pay: UK prices are still to be set, but we’ve confirmed this model will set you back €2,199 (£1,900) on the continent. Here’s hoping we see this tech trickle even further down market – we know plenty of people who only watch movies, not the rubbish on prime time Tv, and would gladly snap one up.
