Running low on gaming titles for your LG Optimus 3D? LG has just demonstrated the world’s first OpenGL-based 2D to 3D conversion engine for smartphones at IFA 2011 in Berlin. The conversion engine will be included in the first maintenance release for the Optimus 3D in October. Any previously purchased 2D games will become 3D-enabled with the push of a button.
“Our Game Converter is a major breakthrough for this industry. Mobile gaming is a huge trend on the cusp of massive growth and LG is determined to be the de facto leader in this space,” said Dr. Jong-seok Park, president and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company.
So how does this magical transformation process work? Well, upon clicking the conversion button the program automatically scans the game to see if it’s listed among the 2D mobile games optimized for 3D conversion. If so, the programs will convert the game to 3D using specific optimized settings. Otherwise all unlisted OpenGL-based 2D games will be converted with manual settings, putting the user in complete control.
At launch LG will have 3D optimized settings for about 50 games and an additional 50 by year’s end. Just in case the patent trolls are eying the conversion tool, LG has filed for several patents to protect this technology in the UK, Germany and US.
