It’s a sad day for the tech world. Overnight, Steve Jobs resigned as Apple CEO. While he’ll remain involved with the company as chairman of Apple’s board, he’s permanently passing the top job to Chief Operating Officer Tim Cook, who was acting-CEO during Jobs’ medical absences.

The resignation suggests that this year’s iCloud keynote may have been the last chance to see the legendary Steve Jobs salesmanship in action. We’ll be bringing you more on the news throughout the morning but for the meantime we just wish technology’s most compelling character well. Read on for his resignation letter in full and share your thoughts in the comments.

To the Apple Board of Directors and the Apple Community:

I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come.

I hereby resign as CEO of Apple. I would like to serve, if the Board sees fit, as Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee.

As far as my successor goes, I strongly recommend that we execute our succession plan and name Tim Cook as CEO of Apple.

I believe Apple’s brightest and most innovative days are ahead of it. And I look forward to watching and contributing to its success in a new role.

I have made some of the best friends of my life at Apple, and I thank you all for the many years of being able to work alongside you.

Steve

Although i am not a fan of Apple these days, you have to respect the man for sticking with Apple in the early 90′s and believing in his vision.

Who’d have thought one day Apple would have been as big as this, i certainly wish i’d bought shares in them when everyone thought Apple were a mickey mouse company!

I’m guessing he has seen the writing on the wall.  The patent victory for Samsung yesterday (where they got 9 out the 10 claims rejected, and importantly, the crucial ones) sets the scene for the other patent judgements yet to come.

I’m guessing that played a large part of this, he wants to be remembered as Jobs when Apple was at the top of it’s game, not the Jobs that was caught was outdone by it’s competitors with cheaper and better products.

Maybe a hunch but i would guess it is his serious illness that made him make the decision.

But the same day the courts rules that they couldn’t patent square things and sue anyone that made anything square or oblong?

He has seen the writing is on the wall, not just for himself but for Apple too.

Consumers are starting to see the marketing wear off and underneath the very average Apple products.

I doubt consumers are wearing thin of Apple’s products, they will probably ship record numbers of iPhone5.  I am not an Apple fan but they have a market and that market will pay top dollar for the Apple products.

I really think this is to do with his illness. I am sure more will come out in the next weeks.
