Sony-NEX-7-b

Sony’s NEX line of mirrorless interchangeable cameras has been producing objects of lust for snappers for some time and it’s just upped the ante. The Sony NEX-7 is the new top of the line model in the range and it is seriously desirable cramming DSLR power into a very slight body.

We were impressed with the Sony NEX-5 when we got our hands on it but prepare to be stunned by the Sony NEX-7′s specs. Sony’s gone all out with this one. Read on for the full specs…

Inside the Sony NEX-7 there’s a 24MP Exmor APS HD CMOS sensor, the same one used inside the top-end Sony Alpha a77 DLSR. Sony says it’ll bring you crisp images even in low lighting thanks to a selection of fast lenses and the camera’s high ISO (up to 20000).

The Sony NEX-7 also captures 1080p HD video at 60fps, 50fps or 25fps in AVCHD format. If you want web-friendly clips, the NEX-7 records MP4 at 30fps in 1440 x 1080 or 640 x 480 resolution.

Response time is one of the Sony NEX-7′s biggest boasts. As well as combining that 24MP sensor with Sony’s BIONZ image processing engine, the camera has a shutter release lag of just 0.02 seconds. Sony claims that’s the fastest of any interchangeable lens camera out there.

AutoFocus gets a boost too with Object Tracking that will keep a focus lock on a target even if its moving around in the frame. In speed priority mode, the NEX-7 will grab still images at up to 10fps.

Rather neatly, the Sony NEX-7 comes with an XGA OLED viewfinder as standard. Sony says gives approximately 100% frame coverage and claims that the field of view rivals optical viewfinders. There’s the option to add on-screen grid lines and a level gauge to help with framing. There’s also a 3in LCD screen at the rear which can be angled 90° up or 45º down and uses TruBlack tech to reduce reflections.

Another major addition with the Sony NEX-7 is manual focus in video mode. That gives you the option of tweaking setting like aperture and shutter priority. Audio quality has also been improved thanks to revised circuitry which Sony says reduces noise levels, particularly when you’re trying to capture a quiet scene.

The model also includes a range of in-camera effects like the NEX models that came before it. There’s a choice of 11 modes and 15 effects as well as 3D Sweep Panorama, Auto HDR and Anti Motion Blur modes. The introduction of a new auto-lock accessory shoe means the Sony NEX-7 also supports a range of accessories like additional LCD monitors.

Sony hasn’t revealed the UK pricing for the Sony NEX-7 yet but expect it to a pretty penny when it launches in November. In the US, it’s set to go for $1199 (body-only) or $1349 (body + 18-55 kit lens). Let us know whether the Sony NEX-7 has got you tempted by jumping into the comments.

Finally a NEX with a pop-up flash, actual hotshoe and EVF. However, aside from the Zeiss 24/1.8, there is still no worthwhile E-mount lenses. Good thing there’s that adapter with translucent mirror, so that you can use A-mount lenses and still have AF.

Though the guy in the video said it will provide more accurate and faster focusing because it uses PDAF, I doubt that’s the case. Faster maybe, but not more accurate. If anything, less so because it may introduce fornt/back focus issues especially if not properly calibrated.

Still that NEX-7 is nice. Just wish Sony will come out with a few more lenses sooner than later with 1 or 2 fast pancakes in the 35-50mm (equivalent) range.
