A world of dual analog inputs is coming to the Nintendo 3DS, set to debut next month at a trade show in Tokyo. According to the French technology website 01net, Nintendo has been developing a joystick for the 3DS and asked certain game developers to come up with new titles optimized for the dual-controller console. The site also claims that a 3DS replacement is set to debut in early 2012. The rumors sent Nintendo shares to the moon, rising over eight percent on the Osaka Securities Exchange.
As much as we love the D-pad and Circle Pad, the Nintendo 3DS needs a second joystick. Many believe the joystick will be a second circle pad, similar to the upcoming PlayStation Vita. The ideas of arming the 3DS with two joysticks is nothing new. Previously, a 3DS concept console hinted at this possibility with removable buttons (pictured above). Both the D-pad and Circle Pad could be removed and replaced, allowing for a variety of button configurations.
The second part of the story is the 3DS replacement. The redesign is rumored to launch next year with the handheld possibly sporting a new name. Leading the revamp will be a lesser dependence on 3D gaming — a bit shocking considering that in itself was the key differentiator over the Nintendo DS. Only time will tell whether these rumors pan out, but in the meantime investor seem to like what they hear.
