Canon-Ixus-1100HS-2

There’s a continual battle among camera makers to build the thinnest model in a particular class. Today’s champion is the Canon Ixus 1100 HS which the company claims is the slimmest 12x zoom compact to grace the shelves. Its predecessor, the Canon Ixus 1000 HS was already impressively slight at 24mm thick, but the Canon Ixus 1100 HS has slimmed its thickness down to a waif-like 21.99mm.

But, of course, we expect more from our compacts that the ability to slip unnoticed into a rucksack. Read on for the rest of the Canon Ixus 1100HS specs to see whether they match up to those slimline looks…

Along with the 12x optical zoom, the Canon Ixus 1100 HS features Canon’s HS system (hence the name), combinining a 12.1MP back-illuminated CMOS sensor with DIGIC 4 image processing which it promises will produce sharp, low-noise images. Round the back there’s a 3.2in touchscreen while inside an improved Intelligent IS system with a 4-stop optical image stabiliser should do away with shaky shots.

The Canon Ixus 1100 HS will also grab 1080p full HD video as well as super slow motion VGA clips at 120fps. There’s a high speed burst mode for snapping 3MP images at 7.8 shots per second and the ability to shoot continuously at full resolution at up to 3.3 shots per second.

As you’d expect, the camera also features a range of creative effects to choose from including Miniature, Fish Eye, Toy Camera and Fish-Eye. If you don’t want to fiddle with manual settings, the Canon Ixus 1100 HS has an Enhanced Smart Auto mode which can detect up to 32 different scenes and adjust accordingly. There’s also an HDMI port so you can view your creations on your HD TV.

The Canon Ixus 1100 HS is out next month for £369. Take a look at our best camera top 5 to see what it’ll be competing with.
