Nokia N8 camera update arrives with continuous auto focus, 30 fps videoThe wait is over. Our friends at Nokia Beta Labs have just released an update to the N8’s native camera application. The update, available free at the Beta Labs website, adds support for continuous auto focus and 30fps video recording. First a Symbian Anna update and now a camera update? Not a bad month for the Symbian flagship if you ask us.

It’s no secret the Nokia N8 has an incredible camera. Up until today its video capabilities trailed behind the still photography. Taking the video recording speed from 25fps to 30fps opens the door to capturing fast-action video clips. Combined with continuous auto focus, the N8 not only replaces your point and shoot camera, it also replaces an entry-level video camera.

Is there anything the Nokia N8 can’t do in the worlds of video and photography?

I’m pretty sure my N8′s camera currently records 720p HD video at 25fps, not 15 (would like to believe I’d tell the difference!). 25fps is actually better for editing video for PAL widescreen, as you don’t get dropped frames as you would with 30fps. Still, the Camera beta is welcome :-)

you might wanna correct your post there. The N8 had 25fps before.

Good call on the fps guys.  Guess this one is more of a NTSC-friendly update.

I’m sure the update will be of great benefit to NTSC users, but the update I really need is a fix to be able to lock the exposure. Whilst this can be done on stills it can’t be done while shooting video as far as I can tell and can be a real nuisance when tracking a shot against different backgrounds – with the subject varying from over exposure to sillouette. It spoils a first rate camera and puts it right back into the ‘basic camera phone’ category. PLEASE can we have a fix for this?
