Tegra 3 delayed: Will the Asus Transformer 2 miss its August launch?Today, new evidence surfaced from Fudzilla confirming previous reports that the Asus Transformer 2 would sport a quad-core Tegra 3 processor. Also confirmed was that Tegra 3, codenamed Kal El, would make its debut on the second generation slate. Unfortunately it might be time to grab that Snickers bar because Kal El “has been slightly delayed for at least a month”.

When Nvidia teased that Tegra 3 (Kal El SoC) would debut in August it was a surprise. Not only was the timing alarming but Jen Hsun Huang, Nvidia’s CEO, said the chip consumed less power than Tegra 2. With better computational power than Intel’s Core 2 Duo, Tegra 3 looks to be the holy grail of mobile computing — at least as far as Android tablets are concerned.

Promises are hard to keep when it comes to release dates and technology. As we move into the second half of August it’s becoming clear Tegra 3 will miss the mark. Without a chip, the Transformer 2 has no choice but to sit the sidelines. Is is really all that bad? Asus just launched its Eee Pad Slider page yesterday. How well would the convertible tablet fair if users were given the choice of an equally priced quad-core Transformer 2?

NVidia’s track record for getting products out on time mostly isn’t great so a delay isn’t really too much of a surprise. I still have doubts that the second generation transformer will be Asus’ first Tegra 3 device though. Mainly because I don’t think it makes sense given the 3G transformer and Slider, both using Tegra 2 would have only just been released (especially considering the staggered global launches with the original transformer). I think more likely Asus’ first Tegra 2 product will be the hybrid smart-phone tablet PadFone. So a transformer tablet, just not THE transformer tablet.
