The latest Apple TV update adds the ability to stream previously purchased TV shows directly from the cloud and buy shows directly from the box. It’s brilliant news but only if you’re in the US. The Apple TV 4.3 software update only adds the new feature if you’re on the correct side of the Atlantic.

One of the biggest complaints in our Apple TV review was that so many features were US-only and it doesn’t look like that’s set to change any time soon. Of course, you can still stream TV shows you’ve grabbed from the iTunes Store from your computer using Home Sharing or AirPlay but that’s not nearly as nifty.

Yes, I am annoyed that Apple still aren’t giving us Brits enough content for streaming.

They need to get off their arses, stop puffing out their chests about how great they are, and get LoveFilm, BBC iPlayer, ITV Player, 4OD and FiveDemand working on the Apple TV sharpish.

Even just getting BBC iPlayer working on there would boost their sales in the UK.

I’m fed up with Apple’s contempt for UK Apple TV owners. It is a great device and capable of so much, but not in the UK unless you jailbreak it and install XBMC and/or Firecore’s ATVflash black.

If you do this, you can play iPlayer and TVcatchup and also stream video from Mac or PC shares. You can also install LastFM which works really well, showing a slideshow of the artist playing. XBMC also allows you to install a Grooveshark plugin and many other nifty things.

I have a jailbroken ATV2 but I’d rather be able to do stuff legitimately. The services that do work on Apple TV2′s stock OS are pretty good. Youtube is great but could have a better search facility and the podcast, particularly video ones, are fab!
