Apple haters, you are quite right to chuckle at this one: the iPhone is finally getting custom text tones. Yes, a feature that was standard on the Nokia 3310, 11 years ago, will finally make it to Apple’s phone in iOS 5. In fact, iOS 5 Beta 3 introduces the ability to set custom sounds for almost every alert including new voicemails, email, sent mail, sent tweets, calendar alerts and reminders.

Of course, if you’re no stranger to an iPhone jailbreak, you’ve probably been setting custom alert sounds for ages. If not, this is a glorious day when we will finally be free from the yolk of Apple’s painfully limited selection. Hopefully this means events where a large number of iPhone owners are in attendance will no longer echo to the tedious sound of the default Tri-Tone text alert.

When Intel outed its Macbook-Air-fighting Ultrabook concept at Computex back in May, Asus was at the front of the queue to make one. The Asus UX21 Ultrabook is slated for a September release but it seems it could be pipped to the post.

New reports claims HP wants to get in on the action first with its own super-slim Ultrabook models. Two designs using Intel Core i7 dual-core processors are said to be in the works with HP outsourcing production to Foxconn. While this rumour comes from DigiTimes, HP’s big boss seemed to drop a big hint about new laptop plans at the D9 conference last month…

Apple has emailed developers with a call to get their Mac OS X Lion apps submitted to the Mac App Store quick smart. The message suggests rumours that Mac OS X Lion could arrive this Thursday might not be far off the mark. Kicking off Microsoft’s annual Worldwide Partner Conference in LA, Steve Ballmer touted the company’s achievements touching on Xbox 360, Bing and Windows 8. But on Windows Phone 7, he was forced to admit that the mobile OS has struggled to make an impact.

While Ballmer boasted about 400m sales of Windows 7 licences in the past twelve months compared to an unnamed company’s figure of 20m (hello, Mac OS X), he was rather more sheepish about the first year figures for Windows Phone 7…

The new MacBook Air, reportedly set to emerge later this month, will see the return of the backlit keyboard according to a new rumour. AppleInsider claims to have sources close to the project who’ve told it that the next version of the ultra-thin laptop will bring back the feature.

It’s generally thought that the new MacBook Air will arrive shortly after the release of Mac OS X Lion this month. There are strong suggestions that it will include a Thunderbolt port, a bump to Intel’s Sandy Bridge processor and new high-speed flash memory.

Bringing back the MacBook Air backlit keyboard would be a welcome inclusion as the first generation of the machine included the feature only for Apple to ditch it when the current model was launched in October 2010.

Will unlocked bootloaders for HTC EVO 3D and Sensation motivate Motorola?HTC took to its Facebook page this afternoon, confirming plans to unlock bootloaders for the HTC EVO 3D and Sensation. As the manufacturer begins testing out the system in anticipation for a September release, the move has lead to speculation over whether Motorola will take notice. Will today’s announcement by HTC set the bar for industry-wide bootloader unlocking?

The scarcity of Android updates has made bootloader unlocking nothing short of a necessity for many Android users. Whether or not a smartphone features an unlocked bootloader plays a role in purchasing decisions, whether manufacturers like it or not. HTC has embraced this well-known fact with its announcement this afternoon.

Nokia loves Android: Symbian Belle design guidelines prove itIt’s no secret we think Nokia should reconsider a future with Android. While that day may never come, today’s leaked images of Symbian ‘Belle’ prove just exactly how much Android has inspired Nokia’s upcoming UI. If you’re a Symbian user hoping for that much needed refresh, these design guidelines will be the perfect treat.

Android became a trendsetter with its pulldown notification system. Apple improved upon the concept with its more advanced, widget-friendly variation in iOS 5.
