Sony Ericsson is prepared to blur the line between tablet and smartphone with its upcoming 4.7-inch 3D display. The massive display will be featured on the company’s first 3D phone, a device many believe will arrive early next year. Unfortunately mystery phone lacks a name, but we have confirmed it will support glasses-free 3D technology and runs at HD 1280×720 pixel resolution. Do we really need another 3D smartphone?
Sony Ericsson’s first 3D smartphone shares a lot in common with the rumors Samsung Galaxy Q. Both devices offer larger-than-life displays (5.3-inches vs 4.7-inches) and neither will fit in a pair of skinny jeans. The only difference, at least as far as we can tell, is that the Galaxy Q might be marketed as a tablet instead of a phone.
Currently we have the LG Optimus 3D and the HTC EVO 3D. In addition, Samsung has been rumored to be working on a Galaxy 3D according to Korean news outlet ETNews. With three of the major smartphone players launching a 3D phone, it seems only fitting that Sony Ericsson would launch a device of its own.
Whether or not the world needs another 3D smartphones is open for discussion (or debate). Personally, I’d prefer Sony Ericsson focus its talents towards developing better 2D smartphones and increased availability in North America. They stepped up the game at this year’s CES convention, but lately they’ve fallen off the radar — at least to this smartphone enthusiast. Now we ask you: should Sony Ericsson release a 3D smartphone?
