The fate of the Amazon Kindle iPhone and iPad apps has been up in the air since Apple introduced new rules back in February demanding a 30% cut of in-app purchases and banning apps from sending users to web stores to purchases content their instead.

Thankfully Amazon has decided not to pull the app entirely but has had to acquiesce to Apple’s demands by removing the button which linked the app to the Kindle Store…

Now to buy Kindle books on your iPhone or iPad, you have to open Safari yourself, type in the web address and hunt down the content you’re after manually. Kindle books will still be synced to the app but the change adds an extra, fiddly layer to the process.

You could avoid losing the link by just not updating the Kindle app but that would mean foregoing any future updates and new features. While the change is only a minor inconvenience it’s definitely a case of Apple putting its interests ahead of users.

If you’re irked by the move, let us know by diving into the comments.

Hi, I was starting to think, maybe an Apple Phone or Tablet might work for me, now the answer for me is, “Stay Away from Apple”. David

Amazon can’t really complain, they are doing the same content lock-in tricks with the Kindle, offering cheap loss-leading hardware and then locking users into only getting content from them forevermore, i-tunes like.

People buying Kindles are idiots, they are allowing Amazon to tie up the ebook market for themsevles, so they can do and charge as they wish.
EPUB is the format of choice for anyone with half a brain, it’s hardware agnostic.

I would never own an Apple product nor a Kindle for these reasons. I want to be able to choose where I buy my content, and have a full market open to me.

I have no problems getting other ebook formats onto my kindle. I regularly purchase ebooks from elsewhere then, if required, convert and transfer across using Calibre, a free ebook manager.

You need to do your research before making bold claims like that. It seems to me the only idiot around here is you for failing to check the validity of your statement before posting.

Converting books, thats rather lame, sounds like you made a horrible mistake buying a Kindle, if you have to fart around with Calibre and crack DRM to used stuff.
