We’re all for ways to avoid talking to clueless folks at call centres wherever possible, and the updates headed the way of the My O2 mobile app promise to do just that.

Soon, you may even be able to buy your new phone at upgrade time, straight from your old one. It’s a good thing it’s an inanimate object and doesn’t have feelings…

O2 has this week revealed plans for the next big updates to its My O2 iPhone app (with an Android app following soon after). Version 2.0, due out before the Autumn, will let you top up your Pay and Go phone from the device itself (Huzzah), and settle monthly bills too.

Of more interest to us though is the plan the UK carrier has for My O2 app version 3.0. “O2’s app developers are also considering alerts for Pay Monthly customers due an upgrade, the ability to add Bolt Ons, and even options for changing your tariff direct from the app,” the company says, which opens up the interesting prospect of actually being able to pick out your next phone and buy it from the app.

That’s right. No dealing with impenetrable accents, awful hold music, or large bills from 0844 numbers. The future’s bright, the future’s O2. Oh, wait.
