If you’ve been enviously eyeing a friend’s Sonos system but were didn’t have the cash to splash out on even the Sonos S5, here’s some good news. Sonos has just launched the Sonos Play:3, a dinky music streamer that will set you back just £259, almost £100 less than its previous all-in-one, the Sonos S5.
You’ll still also need a Sonos Bridge to set up your system unless you want to tie your Sonos Play:3 down with an ethernet cable but the price of that has also been slashed by half to £39. Read on for all the details on the Sonos Play:3 including why it comes packing an orientation sensor…
Inside its compact shell, the Sonos Play:3 conceals a three-driver speaker (one tweeter and two 3-inch mid-range), three dedicated digital amplifiers and a passive, rear-firing bass radiator. Like previous Sonos devices it streams music over WiFi from your PC, Mac or network storage device and can hook into internet radio statios, Last FM, Napster and Spotify.
The orientation sensor inside the Sonos Play: 3 means it can detect whether its being used horizontally or vertically. Lay it on its side and you’ll get stereo output while placing it vertically will get you a focused mono stream. If you don’t have the Sonos controller, you can either fire up the free software on a PC or Mac or use the Sonos remote app on iOS and Android to control the Sonos Play:3.
Combining several Sonos Play:3 units the a Sonos Bridge will give you an affordable multi-room system. There’s also stereo paring so placing two PLAY:3s in the same room means each will play a dedicated Left or Right channel. The Sonos Play:3 is out now and available in white or black.
