Talk of the iPad 3 or even the iPad 2 Plus bringing a retina display to the party has been with us for months. Most recently, developers digging through iOS 5 code in June found provision for bumping up icons to twice the resolution of the current iPad 2 screen.
Now those rumours have been revived by an offhand comment from one of the most well-connected Apple commentators in the world and anonymous sources gabbing to the Korea Times…
In a short rant about his issues with iPad magazines, Daring Fireball‘s John Gruber casually dropped in details of what he believes the iPad screen resolution will be:
“These magazines and newspapers that render each ‘page’ as a static 1024 x 768 image are going to look like utter ass on the iPad 3′s 2048 x 1536 retina display.”
While the comment could well just be speculation, Gruber does have a habit of adding information he’s gleaned from sources within Apple into seeming innocuous posts. The same screen resolution is touted by the Korea Times in a story that claims both Samsung and LG are bidding for the contract to supply the iPad 3 display.
The paper quotes an anonymous source saying: “Apple’s upcoming iPad 3 will feature an improved display to support quad extended graphics (QXGA), a display resolution of 2048 x 1536 pixels with a 4:3 aspect ratio to provide a full high definition viewing experience.”
What do you make of the recurring rumours that the next iPad will pack an retina display? Does Apple need to make the move to keep up or can it hold off a little longer?
