The Samsung Series 5 Chromebook is now on sale in the UK, but it may soon be joined by a cheaper Chrome OS option: the Acer AC700 Chromebook. Unveiled today for the US market, this browser based machine offers similar functionality for a lower price tag – seldom a bad thing.

Coming to the US this month, the Acer AC700 Chromebook offers an 11.60inch LED backlit screen, and is powered by 2GB of DDR3 RAM and an Intel N570 dual-core processor. It’s Wi-Fi only, with a promised six hour battery life, and offers your typical array of two USB ports and a memory card reader, as well as an HDMI-out connection for hooking it up to a monitor or TV – something the Samsung Series 5 Chromebook lacks.

Software of course is identical – it’s Google’s barebones browser-based Chrome OS – but as well as the slightly smaller display, the Acer AC700 Chromebook also offers a slightly lower pricetag than the Samsung model. It’ll cost $349.99 (£220) for the Wi-Fi only model (A 3G model is out later this year) compared to $429.99 (£270) for the equivalent 12.1-inch Samsung Series 5.

There’s no work on UK price or availability but we’ve contacted Acer UK and will update when we hear back.
