The Wii U will use proprietary discs packing 25GB of data, almost exactly the same size as Blu-ray discs, but don’t expect it to play them or DVDs for that matter. Just like the Wii before it, the Wii U is shunning both formats entirely.

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata explained the decision at a meeting of investors and analysts. He’s unapologetic about the ommission because, hell, you’ve already got a DVD player already haven’t you? Read on for his exact words…

Iwata says: “Wii U does not have DVD or Blu-ray playback capabilities. The reason for that is that we feel that enough people already have devices capable of playing DVDs and Blu-ray, such that it didn’t warrant the cost involved to build that functionality into the Wii U console because of the patents related to those technologies.”

As with the Wii before it, modders are bound to find a way to get the Wii U playing DVDs but does it bother you that Nintendo doesn’t include the option straight out of the box?
