UPDATE: HTC has just posted another memo to say that the HTC Desire will receive an Android 2.3 update. Quite the U-turn, but a good one!
HTC Desire owners, come in, have a seat. We’ve got some bad news for you. You know that Android 2.3 update HTC said was coming, bringing all the glorious Gingerbread features to 2010′s phone of the year?
Yeah, that’s not happening anymore. Here’s why.
HTC has just taken to its Facebook page to outline why it’s decided to bin an Android 2.3 update for the HTC Desire.
“Our engineering teams have been working hard for the past few months to find a way to bring Gingerbread to the HTC Desire without compromising the HTC Sense experience you’ve come to expect from our phones. However, we’re sorry to announce that we’ve been forced to accept there isn’t enough memory to allow us both to bring Gingerbread and keep the HTC Sense experience on the HTC Desire. We’re sincerely sorry for the disappointment that this news may bring to some of you.”
That sounds like a challenge to all the Android hackers out there – and in fact HTC fans are already posting links to YouTube videos with 2.3 running on the Desire in the comments of the post (one is embedded below). People have been putting Android 2.3 in one form or another on the HTC Desire since January, but it seems HTC’s custom launcher requires just too much processing power.
Still, at least the HTC Desire HD and HTC Desire Z have been promised updates: fingers crossed HTC doesn’t renege on them.
