Asus Eee Pad Transformer 2 to use Tegra 3 processor, powered by Windows 8?The Asus Eee Pad Transformer entered the tablet scene as an underdog, but quickly rose to the top, becoming our favorite Android Honeycomb slate. Today, a report from Notebook Italia indicates the successor to the Eee Pad Transformer, rightfully named the Transformer 2, will launch in April of next year.

The rumored Transformer 2 will be both lighter and thinner than the current model, possibly on par with the iPad 2. The shocker is that in addition to an Android version, Asus will reportedly offer a more expensive Transformer 2 running Windows 8.

The premium price attached to the Windows 8 version is due to licensing the software from Microsoft. ITPortalPro believes the Transformer 2 will keep the same form factor as the original, but internally there will be a significant hardware upgrade. A quad core Tegra 3 processor clocked at 1 GHz and 3G connectivity are two upgrades they expected to see in the second generation slate.

Battery life on the Android variant will be ~20 hours (Like the transformer), on the Windows 8 variant, ~2.5hours…

Why?   It’s Windows 8, it’s gonna suck, badly…  (and suck battery life badly too).

I’m surprised to see that the Android version will be as late as April, I was expecting that to be heading our way later this year if Tegra 3 rumours are to be believed.

Windows 8 looks promising from the videos, so not sure why Mr_Jelly doesn’t like it, especially since I doubt he’s had a chance to use it. Not sure I’d want it on my tablet though, it would make backup easier (using my home server) but I’d really only want my tablet for web browsing, email, media, maybe TV watching with iPlayer / Sky Go…

Battery life might be lower on Windows 8, but again, without a working tablet to look at I’m going to wait for some facts on this.

Hmm, the article at Notebook Italia seems to say (if Google translate hasn’t mangled it too much) that on release of Windows 8 there will be a version of the Eee Pad Transformer 2 with it on.

This could still mean an Android release of the Eee Pad Transformer 2 later this year…
