Here’s some good news if you’re a Sky subscriber: Sky is launching a new service called Sky Go which will give you access to 30 channels on a range of devices including the iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, PCs and Macs.
The new service is replacing Sky Player and the current Sky Mobile subscriptions from 6 July. Read on for our run down of the five things you need to know about Sky Go…
1 It’s free for Sky subscribers but Sky Mobile customers have to pay
If you’ve got a Sky subscription, Sky Go will now be part of your bundle but if you’ve been paying £5 a month to get Sky Mobile, you’ll no longer have that option. If you’re not a Sky customer or don’t have Sky Sports you’ll be able to subscribe to a range of different packages from £15 – £40 depending on what selection of channels you’re after.
2 Your subscription includes two devices
Sky Go will let you register two devices and watch programmes on them at the same time. If you want to change the devices you’ve registered, you’ll be able to hop into the settings online to do that.
3 The range of channels on offer depends on the device
Sky Go on your PC or Mac will give you access to a selection of channels including all the Sky Sports channels (assuming you subscribe to them), ESPN, Sky News, Sky Movies, Sky 1, Sky Atlantic, Sky Arts, MTV, Disney, GOLD, Nickelodeon, NatGeo, History and Eden.
On the iPhone and iPad, you’ll be limited to the five Sky Sports channels, ESPN and Sky News for the time being but Sky is promising to add more channels for mobile devices in the near future.
4 The Xbox 360 and Fetch TV don’t count as part of your allowance
Sky Player for Xbox 360 and Fetch TV set top box will continue but are being renamed simply “Sky”. They won’t count as one of your two allowed Sky Go devices.
5 It’s coming to Android too
If you’re disappointed that Sky Go isn’t launching on Android as well as iOS devices, don’t be too disheartened. Sky has confirmed that an Android app is in development and will be released later this year.
