iWeb has been on the backburner since Apple neglected to release a new version in iLife ’11 but now it looks as if the company’s website authoring app could be going away for good once iCloud takes to the virtual skies.

MobileMe is being shuttered this time next year and what appears to be a genuine email from Steve Jobs suggests iWeb hosting will be going with it. Looks like it’s time to start shopping around if your website is currently resting there…

An iWeb user emailed the Apple CEO with a simple question: “Will I need to find an alternative website builder and someone to host my sites?” The answer from whay Steve Jobs was just as simple: “Yep.”

Apple made no mention of iWeb during the launch of iCloud so it’s not that surprising to find that it won’t be playing a part in the company’s future web strategy. With so many free alternatives (WordPress.com, Blogger and Tumblr to name just three), Apple seems to have decided hosting iWeb sites is not worth its while.
