By way of a press release this afternoon, Panasonic stepped up to the plate to deliver the shocking news — the 1.4 GHz dual-core Cortex-A9 processor will power its TVs, making it the fastest TV system LSI known to man.
Speed is one thing, but high-performance 3D graphics in full HD is what counts. The Cortex-A9 is no slouch in that department, capable of delivering up all the tasty digital goods your heart desires alongside a wide array of audio and video codec support.
Panasonic is using the dual-core CPU in conjunction with its UniPhier processor which has a proven track record in high quality audio and video processing. In addition to the sheer speed, the new chips will consume 40 percent less power and provide the foundation necessary to support two simultaneous TV broadcasts, Internet based content and applications.
It might be a bit premature to call, but the HTPC market may be on its way out. Sample shipments of Panasonic’s new UniPhier system LSI well begin later this month and with any luck we’ll see the new TVs before year’s end.
