iOS 5 is coming in the Autumn, it was announced at WWDC 2011 today. It brings with it swish new swipe multitasking, Twitter and iCloud integration and a much needed notification overhaul. But, as ever with a huge new software upgrade, not every device will make the cut.

Apple says iOS 5 will be coming to the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPad 2, iPad, iPod touch 4G and iPod touch 3G (Though almost certainly not the 8GB version, which did not receive an iOS 4 update last year). So far, so good – and we’re pleasantly surprised to see the two year old iPhone 3GS on the list.

However, Apple badges up its announcement with the following qualifier: “some features may not be available on all products.” Ruh roh. Apple isn’t saying what won’t make it to what, but we’d expect the iPhone 3GS to fall victim, just as the iPhone 3G did in last year’s iOS 4 update, missing out on the hallowed multitasking functionality.

The question is, what will Apple drop on its older iOS devices? The new notification centre? iCloud integration? We’re digging for more details now and will update when we hear back.
