The BMW solution works for cars travelling under 10mph and detects movement using the built-in GPS system and a single camera. When the car detects that the driver is making a turn, three lasers scan for hazards up to 328ft away. If something is detected, the car will brake and alert the driver with visual and sound alerts.

BMW is demonstrating the system at the Intersafe 2 conference in Wolfsburg, Germany this week. However, it’ll be sometime before it’s ready for real roads, so best just keep checking you mirrors in the meantime.
