EXCLUSIVE: Still waiting around for Google TV to come to the UK? So are we, but in the meantime, another player is prepping an Android powered set top box. Dutch manufacturer Eminent announced its plans for the Android fuelled EM7297 hdMEDIA AND box back in March, but we’ve scoured out a few more details, including launch window and word of a fancy remote. Read on.
At launch, the Eminent EM7297 hdMEDIA AND will come with USB 3.0 support, LAN connectivity and support for OpenGL and Flash 10 for video streaming.
While we don’t yet know what it looks like, we’ve spoken with an executive who’s seen a prototype in action running Flash, and who tells us the model will ship with the most up to date version of Android possible – Honeycomb seems unlikely however as Google has yet to open source the code for its tablet optimised OS, which is also headed to Google TV devices in the US. It is also unlikely that the device will be Google certified, meaning apps must be downloaded from outside of the Andorid Market.

We also understand that the Eminent Android media player will ship with a keyboard-like remote, with gyroscopes inside, so that Android apps run on the TV screen that require tilting actions – racing games, for instance – can be played.
Eminent is working towards shipping its Android media player in the UK and Europe in the second half of the year. Amazon is a current stockist, so we expect to see the device go on sale there in due course.
