Chrome OS has fallen from the spotlight amidst the Android invasion currently underway at Google’s I/O event in San Francisco. Despite the lack of coverage, new rumors suggest Google is planning to offer U.S. students a Chrome OS laptop, complete with cloud-based software, for a nominal monthly fee of $10 to $20. The purported plan would have students commit to a 24-month contract, a total of $240 to $480 over the life of the rental.
The market is filled with sub-500 dollar PC laptops. If Google truly plans to offer a “rental” package for its Chrome OS laptop, $20 per month seems like a tough sell. Currently, Google has the Cr-48, an ultra portable laptop with a 12.1-inch display (1280×800), 16GB of storage, akin to most mainstream netbooks.
Assuming the rumored project steps out of cloud and becomes a reality, would you consider a $10 to $20 per month (£12/month) Chrome OS laptop rental? Or would you be tempted to buy a more powerful, possibly cheaper, laptop and install the OS on your own? Sound off.
