Microsoft is holding its thrilling sounding Professional Developers Conference from September 13 to September 16. That wouldn’t necessarily raise anyone’s pulse rate but rumours are now rattling around that Windows 8 will be officially unveiled at the event, kicking off Microsoft’s latest attempt to battle the arsenal of Android Honeycomb tablets and, of course, the iPad 2.

Launching Windows 8 in September would likely mean that the new OS would start shipping in early 2012. The report is just a rumour but it would certainly make sense for Microsoft to get Windows 8 out into the world as soon as possible.

Mobile network Three has unveiled an extraordinary new sales tool: live video customer service. ‘It’s like advanced video calls, but so much smarter and with more interaction, around a custom built touchscreen’ say B-Reel, the Scandinavian digital gurus who built the bizarre-yet-brilliant tool.

Imagine a Skype video call – except that the sales person on the other end can drag or drop photos of the latest Three phones onto the screen, using a specially-made, multi-touch display. It’s all very Minority Report, you really have to click through and see the video….

Your iPhone is now a 3D scanner!

We’ve written about Trimensional before. It’s an iPhone app that started off creating 3D models of your fizzog using the iPhone screen as a light source to make the scan.

But the latest update is really intriguing, adding the ability to scan other objects with the app. The latest update allows you to export 3D models you create as files ready to fling to a 3D printer or many CAD programmes. Check it out on video after the break…

This week’s most popular and yet slightly flakey Apple rumour is that Steve Jobs has been pushing designers to integrate wireless into the iPod line. The rumours come from Cult of Mac which has a very mixed record in making the right calls about Apple’s next moves and only speculate further that the firm will add the same WiFi syncing smarts to the iPhone and iPad.

Wireless synching seems like a no-brainer to us but its the way Cult of Mac claims Apple will make it possible that doesn’t ring true. Can carbon fiber cases truly be the answer for iPod/iPad/iPhone wireless syncing? Not exactly…

Google Maps version 5.3.1 arrives: manage my places and auto-checkins fixedA fresh new build of Google Maps has hit the Android Market, version 5.3.1. The new version follows the incremental upgrade path, centered primarily on bug fixes. This time around the focus is on issues with Manage My Place, the auto-checkins feature, and Latitude history. Geohot and Sony reach a settlement: vows never to buy a Sony product againThe legal battle between notorious PS3 jailbreaker George “geohot” Hotz and Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) has finally come to a close. As part of the settlement, Hotz consented to a permanent injunction and vowed to “never purchase another Sony product” — he encourages you to do the same. Apparently his message hasn’t affected PSP sales in Japan.
