If you bought a new MacBook Air recently you might have benefited from a subtle speed boost. Apple has switched the SSD lurking inside the new MacBook Air from the Toshiba Blade X-gale SSD to a blade SSD from Samsung. Apple doesn’t normally up a product’s performance without kicking out a refresh but in this case that seems like exactly what’s happened…
Anandtech ran speed tests on the two blade SSDs and found that there is a noticeable difference between them meaning that you’ll see real-world speed differences between a new MacBook Air picked up last year and one of the more recent Samsung-packing models. That’s a bonus if you’ve upgraded recently but a downer for folk (like me) who went for a MacBook Air at the end of 2010.
If you want to check what SSD your MacBook Air has inside, go to the Apple menu in the top left hand corner of your screen, select About This Mac then click More Info. That’ll launch System Profiler. Select Serial-ATA and if you see Apple SSD SM128C you’ve got the faster SSD. If you see Apple SSD TS128C, you’re rocking the slightly slower Toshiba model. Shucks.
