Amazon has pulled the covers off a new ad-supported version of the Kindle. The new, Wi-Fi-only version of the Kindle 3 goes by the name Kindle With Special Offers.

In the US, it’ll sell for $114, $25 less than the current Wi-Fi only model and packs exactly the same specs. The tradeoff is that users will have to deal with occasional ads and sponsored screensavers when their Kindle is inactive. But will it come here?

Amazon says the screensavers will be “attractive” but we do wonder whether a $25 discount is enough of an incentive to bring commercials to your reading. Amazon hasn’t announced UK plans for the Kindle With Special Offers but given that almost all of its projects have winged their way across the Atlantic eventually, we’d expect to see a UK model within months. The question is: would you buy one?

What’s stopping my girlfriend and I from investing in a Kindle or two is the lack of support for lending books in the UK. US users can lend books between friends, rather than having to buy multiple copies of the same book. The price of a Kindle is very reasonable as is.
