The HTC Wildfire S is a super-powered successor to the original HTC Wildfire, which already had more than a hint of the supernatural about it. The most compact HTC Android yet, the Wildfire S has the light and nimble touch of Spider-Man, but with a sturdy casing in plenty of colours, it’s a man of steel, just like the mighty Superman himself.

Behind its extraordinary exterior however lies a true gentleman, just like Clark Kent. One that’ll save you social discomfort, win you new friends and – who knows – perhaps even net you the girl or guy of your dreams before the credits roll on your contract. Its secret identity? HTC Sense and its courteous, automatic hidden features. Read on, and we’ll break them down for you right here.

Extra-Sense-ory perception
It’s the HTC Sense software modification atop Android that provides the figurative superhero “S” emblazoned across the HTC Wildfire S’s chest. Android may be smart, but HTC Sense makes it even smarter. The Wildfire S knows when it has been turned over or moved about thanks to the built-in accelerometer, and Sense puts this knowledge to good use.

Receive a call at any point while your HTC Wildfire S is out and you can simply turn the phone over, screen down, to silence the alert. As HTC says about its own goals for Sense, it’s based on ideas that make you ask “why hasn’t any one else thought of that?” – and while we don’t normally pinch our best lines from manufacturers’ blurbs, this time we couldn’t agree more. This is one accessory from the modern day superhero’s utility belt we could have done with many times in recent memory.

Escape route from embarrassment
The same is true of us all, right? Have you ever been out on date, or just a casual one-on-one drink with a friend and gone slightly pink in the face as the beaming image of your mother/ex/gurning housemate pops up on the caller ID screen? More often than not, we fumble in the panic and end up spilling a drink, launching the phone into a plate of steaming food or making up some garbled mistruth to hide the embarrassment.

This may be pure Clark Kent behaviour, but the HTC Wildfire S’s wallflower side will soak up that damage from here on in. Just turn this pocket rocket over – no more fumbling away at the touchscreen or soft keys – and we’d bet your date/mate will barely raise an eyelid, sure to believe the caller’s rung off themselves. Such a great idea, so little used.

Of course, on the flip side, it’ll save you from the embarrassment of ignoring the person on the other end of the call, too. HTC Sense means your phone can detect its location, and should said location be upside down at the bottom of your bag, it’ll ring louder automatically to help you hear it.

Mind-reading powers
Other than casting you as the master of modern manners, the HTC Wildfire S can even scan the thoughts of your incoming callers. Want to know whether to start your phone conversation off with a gag or an apology? The Wildfire S is here to help.

Once again thanks to HTC Sense, the Wildfire S can display the latest updates about your friends when they call. It’ll show you their latest Facebook update, sure to give you an indication of their mood  – and even tell you if it‘s their birthday today. Never again will you have to awkwardly apologise for forgetting, even if you secretly have! Superheroes save lives, but the pocket superhero HTC Wildfire S will save your social life over and over again – and all it’ll ask for is the occasional battery charge.
