The Sony NGP could face a serious delay and fail to hit its global launch date later this year. That news comes not from some whispering busybody but Sony Computer Entertainment of America president Jack Tretton.

He told Bloomberg that the Sony NGP may arrive in just one region this year rather than Asia, Europe and the US simultaneously. The issue is the result of disruption following the March 11 Japanese earthquake.

Tretton says (mixing his words up slightly): “It may be the straw that says ‘maybe we get to just one market by the end of the year’.” He added that staggering the handheld’s introduction could give game developers in certain regions more time to complete games.

Tretton wouldn’t let on which region might get the device first but it doesn’t look good for the Sony NGP. The Nintendo 3DS is gobbling up sales right now. Will you be interested in the Sony NGP if it doesn’t arrive until 2012?
