We’ve written countless stories about 3D TV but Korean researchers have unveiled the world’s first 4D television which adds in sensory effects to the standard viewing experience. The 4D TV has an in-built sensory panel that ouputs vapour during key scenes to add atmosphere to rainy moments, a vibrating motor for action scenes like Star Trek battles and a fan to replicate wind and release odours appropriate to your chosen programme.
The technology is due to be included in several major manufacturers new TV lines. If 4D TV takes off, sitting down with a sandwich to watch Grimefighters will never be the same again. Read on for more…
Avril Foyles of analysts, Unthink Research, says she believes 4D TV will be an even bigger selling point than 3D for the next generation of televisions: “3D is very immersive but 4DTV takes it to the next level. Imagine watching the Perfect Storm and really feeling the spray on your face or Toy Story 3 and being able to smell the strawberry scent on Lotso. I think it’s a game changer.”
Exact release dates and pricing for the first 4D TV sets is not available yet but the researchers predict the new sensory panel tech will be affordable to implement and have promised special Sense set-top boxes for older HD TVs. Hit the comments to let us know: would you buy a 4D TV?
