HTC Desire S now in stock, ships SIM-free for £409.99The successor to HTC’s best-selling Android smartphone is now available in the UK, SIM-free from Expansys. Priced at £409.99, the HTC Desire S is quite an attractive proposition. While it lacks the dual-core processing power of its competitors, it more than makes up in style. With a design carved from a single block of aluminum and an impressive spec sheet, we’ve been itching for a fix ever since our hands-on session at MWC.

Here’s the scoop: The HTC Desire S is now in stock (28 units available) for £409.99. Your hard-earned coin lands you a SIM-free, unlocked next-generation Desire, a car charger valued at £9.99 and free shipping. Estimated delivery is set for three to four days, but if you can’t wait there’s an option for overnight. That’ll set you back an additional £6.90 if you’ve got a need for speed.

For the upper-midrange of Android smartphones, the HTC Desire S looks to follow in the footsteps of its predecessor. There’s a 1 GHz single-core second generation Snapdragon processor, 768 MB of RAM, 1.1 GB ROM, a 3.7-inch capacitive touch screen, 5-megapixel camera with autofocus / LED flash / 720p HD video recording, and most importantly Android 2.3.

Why is this phone more expensive than an Apple iPad 2?

    • Anonymous

Most high end smartphones cost more than an iPad – fast processors, 3G connectivity, better camera modules and sharper screens come at a price, especially when few companies command Apple’s scale of economies. Even the iPhone 4 costs more!

The iPad 2 processor is dual-core 1Ghz with a superior graphics unit. Apple do charge a premium for a 3g iPad (but this doesn’t reflect the true cost of the 3g unit). The camera I grant you, but the ipad 10 inch screen surely costs more than a 3.7 inch phone touchscreen. Either smartphones are ridiculously overpriced or the iPad 2 is one hell of a bargain.

It’s the latter, honestly – SIM free prices for top end smartphones have always been this way. Remember that Apple will have brought down the price of it’s paying for this dual core chip in that it’ll invariably turn up in a new Apple TV, iPod touch and iPhone 5 – also higher resolution/sharper screens cost more.
