Firefox 4 launched yesterday, and since going live it has already been downloaded 5 million time – giving it a share of just under 2 percent of the worldwide web browser market already. And things aren’t looking so rosy for Internet Explorer 9, which has been available for more than a week: according to web analytics firm StatCounter, IE9 has only nabbed 0.87 percent of the market.
IE9 isn’t compatible with Windows XP, which StatCounter suggests has hampered its popularity, but Internet Explorer still leads the global market with a 45 percent share. Firefox has 30 percent and Chrome 17 percent.
Firefox 4 may have been a resounding success so far, but its swift take-up pales in significance next to its predecessor: Firefox 3 managed a staggering 8 million downloads in its first day of release.
