The roller coaster of gadget trends has resulted in a growing demand for large-screen smartphones. Back in 2001 the mobile industry focused on making phones smaller and more compact. Today small screens are out and big boy screens are in. Smartphones with 4-inch or larger screens now represent 24 percent of the market. Meanwhile smartphones with screen smaller than 3.4-inches dropped 30 percent over the past year. Wondering where the iPhone’s 3.5-inch display fits in?
NDP has completed their 2010 study on smartphone screen sizes. Their research shows that smartphones with 4-inch screen (or larger) like the Galaxy S, EVO 4G and Droid X now represent 24 percent of the market. The market for 3.5-inch to 3.9-inch displays, which includes all models of the iPhone, only increased 2-percent from the year before. The real damage can be felt by smartphones with screens smaller than 3.4-inch. In the fourth quarter of 2009 those devices held 63 percent of the market, but in the same quarter of 2010 their market share dropped to a mere 36 percent.
Now for the top five highest-selling large-screen smartphones of 2010: (1) HTC EVO 4G, (2) Motorola Droid X, (3) Samsung Fascinate, (4) Samsung Captivate, (5) Samsung Vibrant. It’s no surprise that the Galaxy S line walked away with the most device in the top five since they offer a different version on all major US carriers. While this data is focused on the US market, we’d love to hear your thoughts on how you think the UK top five list would stack up. Did you see more large-screen smartphones over the past year compared to years past?
