Sony NGP to offer simultaneous digital and physical game releasesSony’s Next Generation Portable (NGP) has stirred up quite the buzz since being announced in January at a Tokyo press event. Today, the topic of discussion is focused on game launches. Following in the footsteps of the PSP Go, Sony’s NGP will primarily focus on digital content, but like the original PSPs there will also be physical copies (flash cards), released simultaneously.

Before we get ahead of ourselves, physical copies (via proprietary flash cards) will not be available for every game to launch on the NGP. But, the option is nevertheless available. The advantage to developers is “a digital-only method affords more creative risk-taking” — there’s no risk of physical inventory occupying shelves.

With the demise of the PSP’s UMD format, the NGP flash cards will range in size up to 4GB. For heavy graphic intense games, physical media will be much more convenient than downloading to your portable console. If you are using the 3G version of the NGP, physical media would be even more important.

Expect plenty more Sony NGP details to trickle out as we lead up to E3 2011 in June this year. As expected, we’ll be on hand to track down the answers you’re looking for — any questions?
